About Ashwood, Oregon

Ashwood: Once a thriving mining community, Ashwood keeps a slower pace. Off the beaten path, one paved highway which ends in town from U.S. Highway 97 to the west. Ashwood is 32 miles northeast of Madras. Although the town has no commerce now, that doesn't mean it has no activity. The village is held together with post office open 8am - noon, the five-student grade school, the non-denominational community church and the grange.

Ashwood History: Founded in 1898, with the nearest trading posts in Prineville and The Dalles until the Columbia Southern railroad came into Shaniko in 1900, Ashwood became the home of ranchers seeking rich grasslands for their livestock. The Ashwood Gold Rush Days begin in 1896, and played an important role in the history of Jefferson County, primarily in the northeast section, from Trout Creek to the Horse Heaven Hills.
