Visitor Information

Hiking:

The Cove Palisade State Park boasts of having one of the most popular hiking trails in the high desert. The 7 mile trek of the Tam-a-lau Trail starts at the trailhead of the Upper Deschutes Day Use Area and winds it's way to the Peninsula and back again. The elevation is only 600 feet so you shouldn't lose your breath. There is plenty to see on this trail including wildlife, native plants, wildflowers, geological formations and fantastic views.

Juniper Butte hike offers you a view that is hard to beat and is a great winter hike. Juniper Butte is covered by open stands of sagebrush and juniper trees. Trails are carved by cattle, not man. Beware of the water guzzler. It looks like an errant flying saucer, but it collects, stores, and disperses water for resident wildlife. The trail is two miles one way, with an 800 foot elevation gain to 3,925 feet.

Gray Butte Trail is 14 miles northwest on Highway 26. It's a little hard to find, but it's worth the trip. It takes you on and around Gray Butte and some of the best wildlife viewing in Jefferson County. The trek is about 5 miles long, so take some water, pack a lunch and enjoy the view.

Metolius Recreation Area has several hiking trails, but none more beautiful than the Head of the Metolius trail. Short but very accommodating for everyone, this trail sends you to the headwaters of the Metolius River, where the river gets its life from the side of a mountain. There is also a trail along the Metolius River, one around Suttle Lake, the Pacific Crest Trail, a hike to the top of Black Butte (6436 feet), and 6 major trails into the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness area.

Golfing:

Two 18 hole golf courses are situated around the county, offering a variety of challenges for both beginner and expert. The courses are located at Kah-Nee-Ta Resort on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, and Crooked River Ranch. There is also a driving range in Madras, on McTaggart Road, and an 18-hole course at Desert Peaks Golf Club run by the City of Madras, located at 565 NW Adler in the Industrial Park. All courses are open to public play with reasonable green fees.

Crooked River Ranch Golf Course - Sandwiched between breathtaking mountain peaks and the shear wall of Crooked River Ranch Canyon lies Crooked River Ranch. Blessed with 300 plus days of sunshine, this 11,000 acre property is fast becoming the largest recreational sub-division of it kind. In the center of this property is the golfing gem of 18 holes. Risk-reward will challenge the avid golfer. Spectacular views and abundant wildlife are the biggest attractions. Crooked River Ranch Golf Course has a full service pro shop, driving range, putting greens, golf carts, snack bar, golf lessons, clinics and seminars. The course welcomes outside groups such as company tournaments, family reunions and social events. If you are in Central Oregon you've got to try this course!

Kah-Nee-Ta Resort has been a special retreat along the Warm Springs River and a place of rejuvenation for the people of the Columbia Gorge and the high desert. A diamond among the rough high desert terrain, Kah-Nee-Ta has amenities to suit everyone, whether it's relaxation or revival of the spirit. An 18 hole championship golf course meanders along the river and challenges the golfer to concentrate on their shots. The golf course features a snack bar, full service pro shop, golf carts, driving range and the lesson package includes golf school and clinic.
