Wintersports in Jefferson County

Visitor Information
Though Jefferson County does not have a ski resort within its boundaries, there are two world-class resorts within easy driving distance of county residents. To the north, Mt. Hood, where five unique areas are available for your skiing pleasure and Mt. Bachelor, to the south, is home to several world class ski and snowboard events.

Mt. Hood

At Timberline, enjoy the longest season in North America. It's a sentimental favorite and serves as the summer training site for the U.S. Ski Team. There are 261 scheduled days of winter riding and 90 days of summer riding. In winter, the Palmer Express quad whisks skier and boarders to the 8,540-foot level of the mountains south face opening up 3,590 vertical feet of terrain, the second largest lift-serviced vertical drop in the Pacific Northwest. Timberline also boasts the only slope-side lodging in Oregon.

Cooper Spur is nestled on the peak's north-eastern slopes, Mt. Hood lives up to its name at this beginner and family oriented ski area. It shelters skiers, boarders and cross-country skiers from winter winds and storms out of the southwest. Cooper Spur's gentle runs and affordable prices help make this the ideal spot for the entire family.

Mt. Hood Meadows is on the sunny east side of Mt. Hood. You'll find some of the Northwest's most varied terrain at the mountain's largest aki area. There are 87 runs accessed by ten lifts, including four high-speed quads. Mt. Hood Meadows also operates the largest ski school and rental facility. The more adventurous can enjoy snowcat skiing for backcountry decents of nearly 4,000 vertical feet. Cross-country enthusiasts can explore 15 kilometers of groomed trails.

SkiBowl claims to be Oregon's most difficult skiing and snowboarding in its upper bowls. Yet it offers cruising terrain on Multorpor Mountain for less experienced folks. With 34 lighted runs, SkiBowl has the largest night skiing area in America. It also offers a snow tube park and a bungee tower.

Summit Ski Area is the oldest ski area on Mt. Hood and an ideal place for families to enjoy winter fun. Novice skiers and boarders enjoy the nearly half mile gentle slope rising above the Summit Cafe, located at the east end of Government Camp. Cross-country skiers can enjoy 15 kilometers of trails. A supervised sliding hill gives non-skiers a chance to enjoy other snow activities.

Central Cascades

Mt. Bachelor in one of the West's premier ski resorts. The 9.065-foot peak was recently voted the top snowboard resort in the West for its natural, boarder-friendly terrain. With 70 runs, 11 lifts (including seven express chairs), and a 3,365-foot vertical drop, it has the numbers to back it up. When you throw in 56 kilometers of groomed cross-country trails, some innovative youth programs, specialized clinics for women, and sled dog rides, you have a resort the entire family will love.

Hoodoo Ski Area is flanked by the Three Sisters Wilderness Area to the south and the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness to the north. It is blessed with one of the most beautiful mountain settings in the state and a stunning Cascade panorama. The majority of its 600 skiable acres rests on a northern slope that offers dry powder in the winter and fantastic corn snow in the spring. Novice skiers and boarders will enjoy the gentle, wide-open runs from the new Easy Rider chair, while more advanced skiers can challenge themselves on some of the steepest runs in the area. Cross-country skiers can explore the picturesque surroundings on 15 kilometers of groomed trails.

Willamette Pass is a place avid skiers are often reluctant to tell others about. They want to keep it to themselves. The wonderful scenery of Odell Lake and the Cascade peaks bring people back to this family friendly resort again and again. Oregon's third largest ski area has some new terrain that can challenge any skier or boarder. Nordic skiers can work up a sweat on 12 miles of groomed trails.

Jefferson County is in the center of winter fun for cross-country and alpine skiers, snow boarders, snowmobilers, sledders and everyone who likes playing in the snow.
