Experience Jefferson County, Oregon
The Madras~Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce invites you to turn right or left off of Highway 97 and discover the wonders that make Jefferson County a place to call home.
2010. Not only a new year but a new decade ~ a decade where we are celebrating the 100-Year birthdays of Madras and Culver. Happy Birthday!
One-hundred years ago we enjoyed dirt roads, small buildings and horse drawn carriages. In the early days, we celebrated the coming of the railroad in 1911. At that time we were a part of Crook County as Jefferson County wouldn't be established until 1914. We have one thing today we had then: some of the most incredible people living in our area. Jefferson County is made up of communities full of individuals who give of themselves everyday to ensure the success of those all around them. People who have taken risk after risk to build on the success of our small communities. We have always enjoyed our small town family, a place where there is an available hand up and the usual greeting is a smile, a handshake and a hug.
We encourage you to take a look at Jefferson County, and then take a second look. We are blessed with many things in our small communities. We have the Cove Palisades, where three rivers come together creating spectacular views and incredible outdoor recreation, including water skiing, fishing, hiking and camping. Camp Sherman is a page out of history with its scenic beauty, solitude and nearby head waters of the Metolius River. Crooked River Ranch hosts an outstanding golf course, motels and a bustling business district. Culver is home of the State Champion Bulldogs, and where some of the best water on earth is supplied by Opal Springs. Metolius once the hub of the Railroad, hosts events at its Railroad Depot, and enjoys a community pride and togetherness unmatched anywhere. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs are to our northwest, where you can enjoy a full-service resort, Kah-Nee-Ta, which includes the Indian Head Casino. Kah-Nee-Ta offers horseback riding, hiking and an Olympic-size pool heated by the hot springs, featuring two water slides and an incredible golf course.
At the south end of the county you'll find our first winery, Maragas Winery, to the northeast waits some of the finest rock hounding around, where you might find one of our State Rocks, the Thunder Egg. You can go on long drives to nowhere in particular, but eventually all roads seem to lead to the bustling town of Madras, our county seat. From it's fabulous aquatic center to it's million dollar hilltop views. Madras inspires a deep affection within its residents.
The Madras~Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce is in the heart of the community. Our office is located in Madras but our arms reach around the entire county. We encourage you to stop, take a long look and maybe stay a day or two. Experience one of our incredible sunrises or sunsets. The seven mountain peaks and the crisp blue sky will simply take your breath away. Experience Jefferson County and experience a renewed sense of community!
